- Used
- Hardcover
Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & Co, 1872. Cabinet Edition. Hardcover. Good Some pages in various books are loosening but binding is not compromised, and is surprisingly well preserved. Spine ends of all volumes have some rubbing and chipping. Overall condition is actually very good in terms of antiquarian standards/No dust jacket. 20.5 mm x 14.5 mm. Preliminaries of earlier edition (possibly first) published by Smith, Elder & Co., London, are bound in at the front of some volumes. These include the engraving-illustrated frontispiece, tissue paper, and title page, also illustrated with an engraving. Illustrations in some volumes are by author; some volumes are illustrated by others. Handsome, cinnamon-brown cloth, gilt-lettered spine and gilt illustration of Thackeray's bust, front cover. Dark brown end papers. No indication is given whether this is the complete set. Christie's Collectors Guides: How to Buy Rare Books By William Rees-Mogg suggests that one may prefer to put together a less-expensive, interestingly difficult collection of the secondary, clothbound "book-form" issues (such as this) rather than collecting the originally issued "parts", in paper wraps. Dates of publication range from to 1871 To 1872. The Cabinet Editions were issued as a way to sell more books to the masses. As is characteristic of these, they were put together cheaply. The uniqueness of this offering is that they are rare in this quantity as an ensemble, and in this condition. Includes (alphabetized by omitting the word "The") Adventures of Philip, volume 1 and 2; Ballads and Tales; Barry Lynden; Book of Snobs; Burlesques; Catherine: a Story, Little Travels, The Fitz-Boodle Papers, ETC. ETC., in one volume; The Christmas Books of Mr. M. A. Titmarsh, Mrs. Perkins's Ball, and other stories in one volume; Dennis Duval, Lovel the Widower, and other stories, in one volume; The Four Georges: Sketches of Manners, Morals, Court, and Town Life and the English Humorists of the Eighteenth Century in one volume; History of Henry Esmond; History of the Pendennis, volumes 1 and 2; Irish Sketch Book; The Newcomes volume 1 and 2; The Paris Sketch Book; Vanity Fair, volumes 1 and 2; Roundabout Papers (from the Cornhill Magazine), to which is added The Second Funeral of Napoleon; The Virginians volumes 1 and 2. In the book The Four Georges, the oval, sepia-colored, portrait engraving of George IV is bound in upside down and mislocated in the section on George III. Thus, the portrait of George III is missing, but the portraits of the other 3 Georges are included.

Vol. 3: 225pp. and an additional note by author.
With an engraved frontispiece to each volume, numerous engraved illustrations in the text, and publisher's advertisement catalogues to Vols. I and II. Spines lightly sunned. Original publisher's bindings by Westleys & Clark, London. Light yellow FEPs with original owner's neat signatures (Marie Tronchin) on all three volumes. Internally very clean. The first edition of Frederick Marryat's (1792-1848) three volume naval adventure for children, following the Seagrave family and their experiences surviving on an island after shipwreck.
Marryat began writing books for children in 1839 when his own children asked him to write a continuation of their own favourite The Swiss Family Robinson. But when Marryat came to examine Wyss's tale, he considered it so implausible, so… Read More

About this book
First Edition of this translation of the classic letters first issued between c.100 and c.109. John Boyle, fifth Earl of Cork, fifth Earl of Orrery, and second Baron Marston (1707-1762) had literary aspirations and became a friend of Jonathan Swift, Alexander Pope, and Samuel Johnson. But they had no illusions about his intellectual gifts; and Boyle took some revenge on Swift's condescension in Remarks on the Life and Writings of Jonathan Swift (London, 1751). His translation and commentary on… Read More

The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit (commonly known as Martin Chuzzlewit) is a novel by Charles Dickens, considered the last of his picaresque novels. It was originally serialised between 1842 and 1844. While he was writing it Dickens told a friend that he thought it was his best work, but it was one of his least popular novels. The late nineteenth century English novelist George Gissing read the novel in February 1888 "for refreshment" but felt that it showed "incomprehensible weakness of story". Like nearly all of Dickens's novels, Martin Chuzzlewit was first published in monthly instalments. Early sales of the monthly parts were disappointing, compared to previous works, so Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to the United States. Dickens had visited America in 1842 in part as a failed attempt to get the US publishers to honour copyright laws. He satirized the country as a place filled with… Read More
