New York: Random House, 1950. 512 pp, 8 1/2" H. Gray cloth with dark blue title block and gilt lettering/decoration on spine, gilt lettering on front board (including "PRESENTATION EDITION" notation), top edge gray. Publisher's clear mylar dust cover. Stated on reverse of half title page: "This is number 172 (number in pen) of a limited edition specially made for presentation to the Booksellers of America". A tragic tale, set in 1820s Kentucky, of Jeremiah Beaumont's attempt to rise in life on his own terms but, through the agency of others, losing his way. When he is told that his benefactor, Colonel Cassius Fort, has committed a terrible crime, he kills him and is tried for murder. Small bump at top corner of front board, tiny bump at top corner of rear board, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very minor bump at top corner of approx. pages 1 to 300, slight fading to colour at bottom edge of spine, small light stain at top fore-edge of text block. Dust cover has small chips/tear at top of spine and flap-folds, moderate rubbing.. First Edition, First Printing. Hard Cover. Good+/Good-.
