New boards and endpapers, original half title and title. Beautifully illustrated on each page with color images of trains and black and white margin drawings. Stated 1894 on title page but actually published in 1896, as explained in note at back of book. New boards are very near fine, with slight compression at top corners. Text block is fine, with no foxing, writing, tears, creases, or water damage. A beautiful example of a rare and highly collectible book. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
