About This Item

New York: Harper and Row publishers, 1970. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Book and jacket are Fine to Very fine. Minor wear at spine bottom and lower front corner, Priced (6.95) jacket verso shows slight shelf wear. Fine yellow 1/4 binding over blue cloth. Spine lettering perfect in black. This trenchantly funny metaphysical novel centers around a dirty, boundlessly energetic old seer in ancient Greece. Agathon, the Seer in question, has been imprisoned, along with his disciple Demodoos, for helping to foment a rebellion against Lykourgos, the Spartan tyrant. He cannot resist mixing his wisdom with his innate absurdity: he is rude and disagreeable; he reeks of onions, tells dirty jokes that embarrass everyone; at the same time, he is instinctively fair, honest, and wise. This is a fine Gardner First edition, first issue and very collectible. Now mylar protected.
