Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 1972. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Orange cloth in dust jacket; small 8vo. 62 pp. A beautiful copy of the first book by the award-winning poet (among other awards, his second book won the Lamont Poetry Prize) who died in 1996 at the age of 49. This is the scarce hardcover issue, uncommon in any format. Levis was championed by fellow Californian Philip Levine who edited his posthumously published final book Elegy. A very fine copy, the orange cloth bright; in a very near fine complete (not price-clipped) dust jacket with a few short cratches/squiggles on the front panel (likely the usual enemy - someone writing on a piece of paper using the book as a desk), but in brodart cover not noticeable. With none of the usual rubbing or spine wear common to these thin covers.

Description:
1907 1st ed Dream of Fair Women Harrison Fisher Girl Illustrated Color Poetry

Harrison Fisher, the "Historian of American Beauty," was an American illustrator whose works regularly appeared on the cover of 'Cosmopolitan' Magazine in the early 1900s.
"At the top of the heap stands Harrison Fisher, creator of the Fisher Girl and most popular of all Americans who ply brush and pencil for reproduction. By reason of his industry and because of the uniform soundness of his drawings and color sense, he is the acknowledged master of the pretty girl picture"(Cosmopolitan).
This first edition of the book 'A Dream of Fair Women' is filled with romantic full-color illustrations of the "Fisher Girl" type. The illustrations are inspired from the text of famous poems decorated in Art Nouveau style by E. Stetson Crawford. A fine piece!

Description:
NY: Covici Friede, 1928. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine. Signed, limited edition of this quintessential Jazz Age narrative poem by an early New Yorker editor and author of another of the era's signature poems, The Wild Party (1926). Written in terse rhyming couplets, The Set-Up concerns an aging Black boxer, Pansy Jones, who is coerced into throwing a fight against a lesser opponent. Double-crossed by his manager, Jones revolts and wins the fight, only to be chased to his presumed death on the New York subway tracks. March was reportedly inspired to write the poem after a viewing of Negro Boxer, a 1927 painting by James Chapin. The Set-Up became a best- seller on publication, going through numerous early printings, and was later adapted into the 1949 Robert Wise film noir of the same name, although Wise chose to eliminate the poem's racial commentary by making the main character white. This limited first edition, handsomely illustrated by Alexander King, is signed and hand-numbered by… Read More

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence. Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions… Read More
