Description

Toronto, On, Canada: McClelland & Stewart, 1982. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Editor. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. The book and jacket are in very good condition, some shelf rubbing to jacket. Apart from the editors signature on the title page [and Roderick Haig-Brown's daughter] the inside text appears clean and clear throughout. 'Contains a selection of Roderick Haig-Brown's philosophies and feelings, as written and spoken on a variety of subjects, including his Edwardian childhood, a moving reminiscence of his gallant young father who died in the trenches of World War I, to afternoon tea taken with Thomas hardy and to sun-lit pastoral life. He takes time to describe his immigration as a young man to the rough Pacific Coast lumber camps and with moving prose evokes the profound impact of this vast land on an impressionable young man. There are personal statements on the implications of war, on writing, reading, books, and censorship; on law, illuminated by his profound belief that instincts of ordinary people offer the best judicial wisdom; and on the failure of education to equip young people for an increasingly complex world. Finally, he turns to conservation, the burning concern which consumed his attention for most of his life. Rarely has a conservationist written so persuasively or has the realization of mankind's destructive nature been so powerfully conveyed.' 222 pages. 5.75 x 8.6 inches. May require additional postage.
