A complete history of the first century of this important transportation system servicing the Eastern seaboard and points further west. Illustrated throughout with black-&-white photographs of historic scenes and vintage locomotives including the Alliance, the Monocacy, and the Conewago.

Muhlenberg (1812-1886) graduated from Dickinson College in 1829 and practiced medicine in Reading; later he became a banker. A bookplate and inscriptions on the front fixed endpaper indicate that Muhlenberg gave the book to the Union Philosophical Society of Dickinson College in 1837.
