Newly, expertly rebacked in black cloth with gilt lettering; original front and rear boards slightly edgeworn; lacks five leaves (70a-b, 88a-b, 247-48, 281-82, 329-30), but quality facsimiles of those leaves on appropriate vintage paper have been expertly and archivally tipped in. Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1929. Hardcover. Small 4to. Green cloth, gilt. xvi, 261pp. Top edge gilt. Frontispiece map, illustrations, 2 maps (one foldout). Very good. Entwined ownership initials inkstamped in blue on title page; owner's red pencilled occasional brief margin comments erased but sometimes faintly visible. Tight, clean and handsome first edition of Haley's elusive first book, many copies of which were recalled and suppressed because of a lawsuit brought against Haley. Former owner was a hardcore XIT Ranch aficionado, for 1931-32 newspaper clippings regarding related figures (mainly John V. Farwell) have been neatly tipped to the front pastedown, rear endpaper and rear inner flyleaf, causing age toning. GRAFF 1718. NEW HOWES 39. RADER 1731. RAMPAGING HERD 969. SIX-GUNS 894.
