Toronto: Methuen, 1984. 245 pp, 320 pp, 9 1/4" H - 2 volume set. B&w photographs. 1. Years of Impatience, 1950-1960: "Gerard Pelletier - activist, journalist, politician and diplomat - deftly portrays 'a Quebec and a Canada immobile on their surface but moved in their depths by hidden currents of rare power.' And he tells of the birth of the men of action who tapped those currents - who 'were' those currents - and created a new Quebec, confident, assured and comfortable with the ideas and the attitudes of the late twentieth century. (This book) is also about friendships within this band of catalysts loosely joined by a longing that the old order should crumble and pass away. It is about Jean Marchand, the firebrand who aroused the countryside and forged a movement irrepressible in its fight against injustice and corruption. It is about Pierre Trudeau and Rene Levesque, the men of reason and passion who emerged from these years as charismatic titans whose decades-long struggle for the soul of a nation left a Quebec and a Canada transformed. Finally, it is about Gerard Pelletier, who modestly defines his own role as a link between other men touched by destiny, as a simple scribe to the ferment and agitation that swept away a suffocating century-old ideology. (But here he) is revealed not as a scribe, but as a bard, remembering the great days in the story of a people in a style as delightful and as elegant and as warm as the man himself. 2. Years of Choice, 1960-1968, (1987 first edition, ISBN 0458804509): "In 1960, Trudeau is a professor at the University of Montreal, Marchand is president of the Confederation des Syndicats Nationaux and Rene Levesque and Gerard Pelletier are journalists. On the Quebec political scene, Duplessis is dead and the 'Union national' is spinning its wheels. In Ottawa, the Diefenbaker government blunders on. The Liberals prepare themselves, therefore, to take power on both levels of government. Jean Lesage convinces Rene Levesque to get himself elected at the provincial level while 'the three doves' set off for Ottawa. Trudeau and Marchand take to the capital like two fish to water but Pelletier finds it all most difficult. (This book) tells how the years of the Trudeau era began for the media and for a puzzled public. In a style that is warm and concise, Pelletier reveals his intimate thoughts about a critical period in Canadian history."
