About This Item

New York: Houghton Miffflin Company, 1956. Fourth Printing . Hard Back. Fine/Good. 5 1/2" x 8. 238 Pages. A February 1972 reprint of the 1956 Edition. Tan cloth stitched binding with maroon lettering. Dust jacket price $4.95 is unclipped and has some minor edge wear and light chipping. Dee Brown's story reflects the true spirit of the Western novel --- action, adventure, cavalry soldier, and Indian. Captain Tom Easterwood, a man with little respect for spit and polish, but with years of frontier service in the U.S. Cavalry, is well versed in the ways of the West and the Indians. He has one special qualification which leads to his being assinged to Major Quill's frontier command. During the Civil War he served in the balloon corps, and so he became one of the few men in the Western Territories capable of launching a man-carrying weather balloon. At his new post Captain Easterwood becomes dangerously entangled with two women, a treacherous scout, and an old chief of the Sioux whose power has been challenged by a belligerent young warrior. When he finds himself in command of a fort manned by only a handful of trooopers and surrounded by unfriendly Indians, Captain Easterwood turns his experience as ballonist to unexpected purposes.
