Captain Tom Easterwood, a man with little respect for spit and polish, but with years of frontier service in the U.S. Cavalry, is well versed in the ways of the West and the Indians. During the Civil War he served in the balloon corps, and so he became one of the few men in the Western Territories capable of launching a man-carrying weather balloon.
