Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1944. 14th printing of 1944 1st ed. SIGNED BY AUTHOR on title page, inscribed "For Stephen with best wishes" and dated 1972. Backed in black cloth with paper-covered boards illustrated in full colour. Clean and fresh in appearance with minor rubbing to extremities; one corner tip has a small paper chip with board exposed else vg. Binding is tight, text and picture pages pristine, as are pictorial endpapers. Verso of ffep has small tape marks: apparently some special piece of ephemera was attached facing the author's signature, but this is missing. Nevertheless a beautiful book. Dustjacket is clean and bright, unclipped (retail price sticker $3.95 on front flap), with minor wear to edges and extremities; silver Caldecott honor medal (Caldecott honour winner 1945) on front panel. A picture book reflecting the author's love for and understanding of the Amish people and their traditions: about an inquisitive little boy's efforts to be "really a man" and not such a "Wondernose". A real treasure of a book.. Signed by Author. Reprint. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Illus. by Author. 9 x 9.75 in. (22.5cm x 25cm).
