About This Item

New York: Alba House, 1965. First American edition. Octavo, original red linen boards, original illustrated dust jacket. Book fine with short closed tear to top and faint toning to the bottom of dust jacket. About fine.

First American edition of this biography of Augustine's formative years, centering on the Confessions, and illustrated with 3 plates. The text is prefaced by a passage from the Confessions (10:38), a Foreword, and an Introductory Note: The Confessions. "St. Augustine was the first Christian to regard human experience--notably his own life story--as the fit starting point for reflecting on God. The word 'confession' has two meanings. Both the confession of guilt and the confession of faith are implied in the title of Augustine's memoirs. In this work, he reflected on the meaning of his life in light of his most pivotal turning point his conversion and baptism in the Catholic church." (Robert Ellsberg, All Saints). Dust jacket, half-title, and frontispiece illustrated by Bro. Paul Kinarney, S. S. P. With a Select Bibliography and an Index. First published in Great Britain in 1954. McLean, An Annotated Bibliography of Philosophy in Catholic Thought, 279.
