Stated First Modern Library edition, 1958 of Irwin Shaw's novel, which is set against the backdrop of WWII and was later made into a movie starring Montgomery Clift, Marlon Brando and Dean Martin. Though copyright page indicates a 1958 first edition, the dust jacket title count indicates a 1959 issuance. --- In Toledano spine 8 / light grey cloth / gilt titling on black spine & cover blocks / black topstain / grey Kent endpapers / jacket style i / verso advertises 385 titles in ML catalog. Possibly published c.1958-1959. ML #112.3. --- A Good+ copy, with rubberstamped number "70" to textblock top and bottom edges, inked gift inscription to front fly, sticker removal evidence to front free endpaper and a little looseness to front cover. Price-clipped dust jacket with some chipping to spine ends and some rubbing to extremities, but remaining intact and bright; protected in removable mylar wrapper.; 12mo 7" - 7-1/2" tall; (6), 689 pages .
