Description

~~FLAT SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON FFEP~~ Bristow, OK: The Coronado Press (1st Edition, Coronado Chapbooks, undated). Chapbook in very good condition, with textured wraps and red titles/illustration, unpaginated. Dust jacket in poor condition: age discoloration, some spotting on front, chipping and closed tears along the edges, open tear at base of spine. Front and back covers of dust jacket have been reattached with clear archival document tape. (See our photos for condition.) Text is clean and unmarked; pages toned. Three-hole saddle sewn binding is intact. YOUNG MAN'S COUNTRY was the first chapbook of a proposed series of Oklahoma (or southwestern) poets to be issued by the Coronado Press. Excepting three lines, the book is machine set, entirely from one magazine and on one measure. The impressions were made on a platen press on soft paper, with no make-ready. The first aim of the Coronado Press was to acquaint localities with their own artists by means of small books that were made economically. HENRY TIM CHAMBERS (1903-1988) was born at Mountain Park, Oklahoma Territory. He attended the Oklahoma Institute of Technology, in Tonkawa, Oklahoma (where his English teacher was Muna Lee) and later attended the Tulsa, Oklahoma night schools, and the University of Tulsa. He began to make rhymes early, his first being one on "The New Preacher," at the age of four. He continued to make rhymes, and sold some, but he was never genuinely interested in poetry until 1931, when Natalie Hankemeyer, of The Sun (New York City) began to buy his verses with some regularity, and to scribble notes on his rejection slips. Chambers contributed verse to the Kansas City Star, The New York Times, The Sun, and Harper's Magazine.
