1910. From "Orange and Green." [Dublin/Belfast?:] The Educational Company of Ireland, n.d. Original rose paper-covered boards lettered in black.
First Edition, later issue, of the last "book written by Henty" to be cited in Newbolt -- though actually it is a section of his earlier historical novel sited in Ireland, ORANGE AND GREEN (1887), posthumously adapted for Irish schools by H.P. Courtney. The earliest issue, printed and bound in Ireland, was published by Blackie around 1900 -- "the only book by Henty to have both Dublin and Belfast in the imprint" [Newbolt]. As Newbolt goes on to explain in detail (Note 2), at around the turn of the century Blackie embarked on general educational publishing in Ireland, and were for a time extremely successful. As the Sinn Fein movement grew stronger, however, business became more difficult, and in 1910 the Irish branch [of Blackie] was made a separate Company with an all Irish board, known as the Educational Company of Ireland Ltd." This is a copy from that later (post-1910) entity. Condition is very good (minor wear at the extremities, deft repair at the spine ends and inner hinges, faint glass-ring on the front cover). This was a very cheaply-produced book, for the use of children -- which accordingly is quite scarce today. Newbolt 122.1, Note 2.
