From the jacket--Although Sir Philip Sidney is usually studied today as a literary giant, in his lifetime he was seen as a brilliant young aristocrat, a budding protagonist in diplomatic and state affairs. This biography of Sidney's formative years provides a penetrating reexamination of his significant role on the stage of European history. It offers decisive evidence that Sidney was considered to be the future leader who might head the Protesteant League to unite the Lutherans, Calvinists, Huguenots, and Anglicans in defense against the Counter-Reformation, especially the ambitions of Philip of Spain.
