The Illustrated London News; No. 2073; Vol. LXXIV; 1 pages; Image measures 14.5 X 9 inches; matted measures 22 X 14 inches. This illustrated titlepage of the March 8, 1879 issue of The London Illustrated News has a banner illustration of the City of London with the River Thames in the foreground showing a steam paddle boat and several boats with teams of rowers. The primary illustration three soldiers and a large Gatling gun readying for practice, likely in preparation for the Battle of Ulundi which took place at the Zulu capital on 4 July 1879 and was the last major battle of the Anglo-Zulu War. The British army broke the military power of the Zulu nation by defeating the main Zulu army and immediately afterwards capturing and burning the capital of Zululand, the royal kraal of Ulundi. The image measures 9 1/8 X 14 1/2 inches; the matted print measures 14 X 22 inches. Engraving by W.I.M. after a drawing by William Heysham Overend. The image also appeared in Harper's Weekly, Supplement, April 12, 1879, p. 297. William Heysham Overend, ROI (1851 – 1898), was a notable British marine artist and book illustrator who died prematurely in 1898. Beginning as a painter, Overend moved into illustration. Overend's work was characterised by thoroughness. His connection with the Illustrated London News began in 1875 when he illustrated the Sir George Nares Arctic expedition. Overend also illustrated articles in The English Illustrated Magazine from 1891, Good Words from 1894, The Rambler from 1897, The Pall Mall Magazine, and the juvenile periodicals The Boy's Own Paper, and Chums from 1892, Overend also drew for The Illustrated Naval and Military Magazine, The Graphic, The Magazine of Art, and The Leisure Hour, London Society, St. Nicholas, and The Penny Illustrated Paper.
