Hardcover.  Brown boards with illustration in gilt on front cover and spine lightly soiled and shelfworn with gilt on spine dulled.  With wear along edges and edge points gently bumped and worn to boards. Spine ends are chipped and worn, with the lower inch of front guttter chipped.  Page edges are soiled. Internally, yellow end pages lightly soiled but free of previous owners marks or signatures with the 2nd free end-page removed. The full page plates are age-toned but otherwise a very good copy. The binding is tight and hinges intact.

New York: Allen Brothers, 1869 A collected American edition of Andersen's works with prefaces to two of the volumes and a memoir by British writers Charles Boner and Mary Howitt. Two of the volumes are dated 1869 with the others being undated. The binding title incorrectly refers to the tales of Andersen as "German" (Andersen is Danish). Also, we have been unable to determine if there are more books in the German Popular Tales series; a search of OCLC revealed other potential volumes (Little Ellie and Other Tales, The Shoes of Fortune and Other Stories, The Ugly Duck and Other Tales, etc.) by Andersen and published by Allan Brothers in the same time period. All volumes are known in a very small number of copies, and most in just one copy. OCLC has no listing under "series.".
