Spine has been rebacked and has library markings. Library markings are also present at front and rear pastedowns. Moderate chipping to all edges of boards. Front and rear hinges are cracked exposing mesh. Some pages at the middle of the book are frayed at the foredge of textblock. Interior pages are clean. Illustrated with a frontispiece and with seven plates and four maps. Nevins 40. Gathered from interviews and other primary sources (including an interview with U.S. Grant), this biography details the strategy and mindset of General W.T. Sherman. Nevins states that this work is also a defense of Sherman. The corners and spine edges rubbed, a bookplate on the free front endpaper, light foxing to the rear endpaper and pastedown.
