Description:
Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1935. Dashiell Hammett's original submitted Treatment script for the first sequel to "The Thin Man," here referred to only as "Thin Man Sequel," and ultimately titled "After the Thin Man." With a single holograph correction by Hammett, and letter of provenance from Hammett's daughter Josephine Hammett Marshall regarding the discovery of the treatment in the family's estate. The first "Thin Man" film, released in 1934 and based on Hammett's novel, was a smash hit and is today a key film in the American screwball comedy cycle. Five sequels were made between 1936 and 1947 (all starring the original acting team of William Powell and Myrna Loy), and this previously unknown attempt at a sequel by Hammett was clearly commissioned by MGM but never produced, making this script an entire unpublished Hammett work. The story is a completely original one, never reworked for the other films, very much written in Hammett's trademark style and reading a bit more like a…

Description:
Dating from July 31, 1944 - July 5, 1945, typed single space (one letter is typed at one and a half spaces) on thin, air mail paper. Three of the letters are two pages, and the rest are one page each. One letter is signed “Dash,” and the rest in pen and in pencil as “SDH.” There are a few small corrections in Hammett’s hand and an occasional note in Mrs. Whitfield’s, who was married to Hammett’s friend and hard-boiled writing colleague, Raoul Whitfield. The letters reflect Hammett’s warm, intimate feelings for the recipient, and are mostly filled with cheery chat and stories of idle, lonely army life. “I’ve been half-seriously monkeying with the notion of doing --or trying --a longish poem that would be called ‘The Aleutians Don’t Give A Damn’...This notion too...will likely as not be put away in the drawer marked Projects thought up in the absence of women, which is already pretty full...Tonight I’m going to treat myself to a tub bath, the first in about fifteen months,…

Description:
("Dashiell Hammett") in black fountain pen ink on pictorial Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer letterhead. Culver City, California, July 15, 1938. Also signed in green fountain pen ink by Eddie Mannix as Lowes Vice-President. 3 separate pages. Fine, fresh. For a sum of $12,500.00 Hammett agrees to let MGM have right of first refusal on any of his past writings, as well as any new writings to be created in the next year. The document goes into great detail on all specifics, effectively giving MGM control over his creative output past and present. Hammett's writing skill had failed him by this time. Although, he did manage to finish his final 144 page screen outline for "Another Thin Man." He was drinking heavily, had gambled away his earnings on the horse races, was in debt and owed six months on his penthouse suite at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel (Nolan p. 165). In 1943 he staged a brief comeback when he wrote the screenplay of Lillian Hellman's "Watch On The Rhine." Hammett…

Minneapolis, 1945 Minneapolis: 26 August 1945. Three pages, written over two leaves of 1452nd A.A.F. Base Unit Service Center letterhead; with the original envelope postmarked August 27th [1945], addressed in Hammett's hand. A fine manuscript letter with the usual creasing, else free of any wear or damage. Written in the weeks leading up to the end of World War II, this letter is addressed to Hammett's friend Lee Browne, and describes some of the most recent developments among his group of fellow soldiers. A veteran of World War I, Hammett re-enlisted in the Army after the attack on Pearl Harbor, serving for three years despite his ailing physical health. Hammett would later be imprisoned for his political activity as a leftist working to combat the wrongful imprisonment of alleged communists. Most famous for the development of the hard-boiled crime novel, Hammett himself worked as a detective at the start of his writing career. "Dear Lee- . Signed by Author. Fine.

1944. One page, 8 1/2 x 11 in Fine condition with envelope. On "Yank" Alaska edition letterhead. Writing to an Army friend in Detroit "Don't let this paper fool you....It only means I'm using Yank's office tonight and I'm going to stop it and take my trade elsewhere if they don't put darker ribbons in their typewriters....Last week I wound up on a four-month--some ten thousand miles in all--romp....Anything you want to know about Alaska and the Aleutians, just ask me. Yes, the Eskimo girls at Nome are often very pretty, usually very good-natured and practically always very diseased. No, there's no sense in trying to rig up a sea otter poaching racket on Amchitka, because, while you could angle it OK there, you couldn't peddle the skins anywere except, perhaps, in the London black market. Yes, Kodiak is a little gem, whether you want to shoot, fish, drink or futz around with dames...." Hammett continues for another paragraph with discussion of his future…

San Francisco:: (2005), Vince Emery Productions,. Fine in fine dust jacket in a fine slipcase (a new copy) Two promotional cards laid in. . Limited, signed edition. A book which "rescues 21 long-lost Hammett stories, all either never collected in an anthology or unavailable for decades. These stories appear nowhere else, and represent a variety of styles from the famous mysterysmith: his first detective fiction, humorous satires, adventure yarns, a sensitive autobiographical piece, and a Thin Man story told with photos. In addition, all stories have been restored to their original versions, replacing often wholesale cuttings with the original text for the first time." Joe Gores has written an introduction describing how Hammett influenced literature, movies, television, and Gores own life and Vince Emery provides the background to these stories and commentary on Hammett's writing life. Number 20 of 195 copies SIGNED by both Gores and Emery on the first page. Illustrated, all edges…
