New York: Simon and Schuster, 1963. [Landmark spy novel]. FIRST US EDITION. Octavo (21 x 14cm), pp.287; [1], blank. Publisher's cloth in original dust-wrapper with the same Hawkey jacket design as the UK edition, priced at $3.95. Bookplate of art collector, philathropist and Carnegie Medal recipient Shelby White. Later pencil ownership of bibliographer Jon Gilbert. Contents clean, some minor handling to jacket. Near fine. Len Deighton's classic debut spy story, introducing the cult figure of Harry Palmer (although the character's name remained anonymous for some time). Described by Ian Fleming in the Sunday Times as one of his 'Books of the Year'. Book Collector No.287 (p32-62) 'The Sixties'. Milward-Oliver; Len Deighton Annotated Bibliography.See also Gilbert p.548, 651.
