Description:
New York: Random House, 1952. First Edition, First Printing. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good in Archival Plastic. A wonderful First Edition, First Printing (so stated) of Ralph Ellison's classic work, signed and dated by the author on the title page, "Ralph Ellison, April 4, 1986." In beige and black cloth with white titling, the book is in near fine condition with a slight lift to the beige cloth on the spine and slight loss of lettering, light spotting on the black topstain and age toning to the pages. But still a solid near fine first with "A.B." on the bottom of the copyright page as required. The very good dustjacket is complete with the original price ($3.50) and the colorful panels as well as the cream panels are bright. There is wear and splitting at the folds and minor loss at the spine ends. Also there is a quarter-size abrasion on the back panel and other minor wear on the dustjacket designed by E. McKnight Kauffer, but still very good. This important book is… Read more

Description:
New York: Random House, 1952. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Modest amount of the usual rubbing on the spine, and a few smudges on the boards, near very good lacking the dustwrapper. The front fly bears a full page Inscription to author and longtime *New Yorker* editor, Robert Bingham in the year of publication: "For Bob and Janet Bingham - who understood what is valid and not sheer fantasy of these matters and these adventures before I worked up this sweat. Perhaps this is why we were friends almost on sight. Sincerely, Ralph Ellison. Sept. 1952." Bingham has marked a few passages in the book lightly in pencil, including on the first page: "...because people refuse to see me." Winner of the National Book Award, as well as a *Burgess 99* title. We have handled a few inscribed copies of this title but this is clearly the nicest inscription that we've seen.

Description:
An important existentialist work. First edition, first printing book in probable second issue jacket (Gordon Parks' photo of Ellison on rear panel, but price of $5.95 vs. $3.50). Book near fine with black top staining retained and jacket in near fine condition with minor wear around extremities/spine head and tail, tiny nicks here and there but still very pleasing – black dust jackets are notoriously easy to trash so this one is a welcome sight. Housed in custom case.*********** Inscribed by Ellison – "For Fred Goldstein, With thanks for his help and for his patience. Sincerely, Ralph Ellison"******** A previous bookseller typed note identifies Goldstein as a Random House editor. He's a mysterious character as we've been unable to find records on this man – despite contact with eminent Ellison scholars and Random House. Ellison did not publish much in his lifetime, so it wouldn't require a large imaginative leap to think Mr. Goldstein played a role with the publication of Invisible Man.… Read more

Description:
NY: Random House. (1952). His first book, winner of the National Book Award in 1953. A high spot of 20th century American literature -- both a classic of African-American fiction and a book that transcends such a racial identification to stand as a literary landmark on its own terms. In a poll conducted in 1965, 200 critics, authors and editors judged Invisible Man to be "the most distinguished single work" published in the previous 20 years. A fine copy in a very good dust jacket with minor rubbing, small edge chips, and splitting to the rear flap fold. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine.

Description:
New York: Random House, 1952. First Edition. A very good copy in a good dust jacket. With the ownership signature of novelist Anton Myrer. Laid into this copy is a typed note (”Dear Tony”) on Random House letterhead from editor Albert Erskine (signing in ink as “Albert”) sending him an advance copy of this book (clearly this copy), praising the novel and seeking his opinion. Erskine was an editor, likely editing Myrer’s first book, published the previous year by Random House. Erskine also edited Warren, Welty, Faulkner, Michener and others, but might deserve greatest praise as this novel’s champion.

E-156: Random House. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. 1952. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Hardcover. 8vo. Random House. 1952. 439 pgs. Ninth Printing. Signed and inscribed by Ralph Ellison on the titile page. DJ has shelf-wear present (chipping present to the spine ends) Bound in decorarted cloth boards. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities Text is free of marks. Binding tight and solid. We rely, in this world, on the visual aspects of humanity as a means of learning who we are. This, Ralph Ellison argues convincingly, is a dangerous habit. A classic from the moment it first appeared in 1952, Invisible Man chronicles the travels of its narrator, a young, nameless black man, as he moves through the hellish levels of American intolerance and cultural blindness. Searching for a context in which to know himself, he exists in a very peculiar state. "I am an invisible man," he says in his prologue. "When they approach me they see only my… Read more

Description:
Random House. Welcome to our small, family-owned bookstore. Copyright 1947, 1948, 1952 by Ralph Ellison. Published by Random House. Stated First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good for its age. No dust jacket. Cover is black with a light tan cloth overcover on the top third with a black-ink line drawing. Some remnants of fingermarks are on the overcover, but the drawing is clear. Slight lift to the cloth on the backstrip. The covers show some signs of wear, especially at corners. The title and names on the back strip are almost completely worn off (Invisible). Age-tanning and a little soil on the outer edges of pages. Top of the page block is blue, maybe a little faded. A previous owner signature and a number in pencil appear on the flyleaf. But after all that, the pages are clear and unmarked. Sewn binding is strong. A well-kept book, overall. Packaged using bubble wrap and a sturdy cardboard box. Tracking number provided for no extra cost. Thanks for checking out this book from our small town… Read more
