Title page is undated, but this is from the uniform edition (7.5"" tall) of The Novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky (Volume III) published in the 1910s, states that 'other volumes [are] in preparation,' and includes a folded Macmillan advertisement of their 'New 1916 Novels.' Small Brentano's sticker on rep. Wear to covers, especially darkened spine, endpapers spotted, front hinge cracking. Also known as The Devils or The Demons, and originally published in 1871-2, this is the violent and bloody tale of the sinister hero Stavrogin, a powerful example of Dostoevsky's 'great sinner who has lost his faith.' Publisher's red cloth with gilt titles and decoration to spine, and a blind device to upper. Small blue bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. A black ink ownership, and a blue ink Convent school inscription to flyleaf. Spotting and toning to edges and endpapers. Occasional light thumbing and creasing. Light rubbing to cloth with some white splashes to boards. Spine toned and gilt dulled, with a small white 'VI' to base denoting the Convent form number. Very good. The third volume of Dostoevsky's works translated by Garnett between 1912 and 1920, and notably not one of the titles translated into English by Frederick Whishaw in the 1880s.

An excellent better than very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little rubbing and bumping to the extremities. The contents are entirely complete and without loose or torn pages. The contents, with the previous owner's small Toronto address label to the front endpaper, are otherwise remarkably clean and bright throughout. Housed in a bespoke quarter black morocco solander case. A lovely example, which due to the weight and bulk of the text block and relatively thin binding, makes copies in collectable original condition exceptionally scarce in commerce.
