George Bell & Sons, 1877. Not Stated, Presumed First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/No Jacket. vi, 762 + 128 pages. Faded gold lettering on the spine. Spine is faded, corners and cover are lightly scuffed. Both front and back inner hinges are cracked, sewing supports are tight. This volume seems to have been bound incorrectly as the title page and table of contents are at the end of the 762 pages of content, followed by the first 128 pages of Volume XVI - No. CXXXIX. A very good copy of this scarce children's literature book, filled with b/w illustrations.

Contains A Great Emergency by J.H. Ewing and her In Memoriam for her mother Margaret Gatty who was the first editor of Aunt Judy's Magazine from 1866. 15 mm (¾") split at top of lower hinge, slight wear to head and tail of spine, corners and spine edges, some small scrapes to leather surface, inner hinges cracked, binding tight, name on front endpaper, occasional very pale staining. Coloured frontispiece by Richard Andre, 2 black and white illustrations by him to The Poet and the Brook by Mrs Ewing. Numerous other black and white illustrations by Randolph Caldecott and Gordon Browne and others. Authors include Mrs Molesworth and Mrs Ewing. Child's name in ink on upper cover, spine gilt dull, head and tail of spine and corners very slightly worn, tiny nick to cloth at tail, a little spotting to cloth, especially on lower cover. Child has quite neatly painted in the dress on the frontispiece and 1 other text illustration, title page reinserted and chipped, slightly torn, slightly foxed and dusty along edges, no loss of text.
