London: Horace Cox, 1888. Hardcover . Used - fair. Thick 8vo. Sixth edition. 110 of the 111 illustrations present, plate no. 74, 'Five Rater,' cut out. Plate no. 38 (fold-out) loose and missing one of four panels. Roughly 15 to 20 other plates with short tears, only one of which reaches the illustration. Some other plates have chipped edges or inner page edge curl. In sum, at least 95% of the plates are in fine condition, with only a handful either missing or with any serious damage. Royal blue cloth covers heavily scuffed and joints split (covers remain intact).

As thorough an explication of 19th century yacht sailing and designing as exists in one volume. Toy calls it, A classic work by a central figure in British yachting... Toy 2152. Some light spotting and browning. Rebacked preserving old label, corners repaired, hinges relined, a few marks to boards. An early but much-expanded edition of this copiously-illustrated classic work on practical sailing, first published 1878 with a third as many plates.

London: The Field, 1878. First edition of a classic and much-reprinted work. Despite its title Kemp's book is more concerned with yacht design and details of construction than with seamanship. Text, plates and illustrations in the text detail British and American yachts, their designs and rigging. With interesting chapters on steam yachts and canoes. Toy considers Kemp a central figure in British yachting, citing this book's "crisp and authoritative instructions on... building, equipment, seamanship, open sailing boats, centre-board boats, sailing boats of the Clyde and Mersey... steam yachts, ice yachts, and canoeing." Pages 313-384 are an illustrated dictionary of yachting terms. See Toy 2152. Bound in publisher's blue cloth, backstrip laid down, endpapers renewed. Light rubbing to cover. Kemp's classic work on selecting, inspecting, and building a yacht along with detailed instruction on seamanship and sailing in open yachts, steam yachts, ice boats, and much more. This edition was published in two volumes: the first being the main text volume illustrated with engravings and the second being a volume of 124 folding plates. The present book is the first volume only. See TOY #2152; MORRIS & HOWLAND p. 76. Bound in royal blue cloth over boards with black endpapers, spine titled in gilt. Rubs to edges of boards, fraying of .25" along head and heel of spine, some evidence of old dampstaining at top 1.5" of lower board. Hinges sound.
