Notorious exploration hoax travelogue from the 1870s. 283 pp. Colour frontispiece, of the highly suspect 'Mount Hercules' (32,000 feet, taller than Everest). Fold-out map at rear showing the 'expedition' route and features. This colourful, entirely imaginary exploration travelogue was soon after publication shown to have been an elaborate hoax, the author never having set foot in New Guinea. Book and binding clean and bright. Name inscription (of Walter Wren, Powis Square, London, at head of contents page). Just a little wear to leather at head of spine. Overall VG+

Clear adhesive tape to spine, corners bumped and rubbed, previous owner's bookplate, occasional marginal pencil note, fair copy of uncommon work. Captain John Lawson explored New Guinea in the 1870s. (The colour frontispiece shows "Mount Hercules": the author claimed that this peak is 32,783 feet and that he climbed it in a single day.) Ferguson 11492. 1st edition. Boards.

Brown cloth hardcover with black imprinted designs and title on the front cover. Title and designs on the spine. Restored. The outer joints and inner hinges were repaired. The hinges repaired with light tissue. Head and base of the spine patched. Interior contents, illustration and map are in very good condition.
