First printing. 12mo (18cm); publisher's brown embossed cloth; 79pp. Front and rear endpapers have been excised; moderate aging and wear to cloth; complete and Good. Lunt (1803-1885) was chief editor of the Boston Daily Courier from 1857-1863. The four articles reprinted here are titled "Revival Sermons;" "Mr. Ralph Waldo Emerson as a Lecturer;" "Fair Play to Women;" and "The Philosophy of Abolition." Lunt being a loyal Democrat, this final essay is predictably conciliatory towards the South, repeating many of the standard religious arguments defending slavery - a point of view which would certainly have made him appear "radical" (or at least unpopular) in Boston during this time.

The front cover contains an area of fading or discoloration. A mild water stain line is visible on front end papers; pages are generally clean but lightly age-toned. George Lunt (1803-1885) was the U.S. district attorney for Massachusetts during President Zachary Taylor's administration. In 1857 he became editor of the conservative "Boston Courier." [DAB]. Lunt's book collects four anti-liberal essays which were originally published in the "Courier." Among them are the following - a diatribe against reformer Theodore Parker, a refutation of a lecture given by Ralph Waldo Emerson, a refutation of a pro-suffrage lecture given by Georg W.
