The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners have some rubbing, bumping and light fraying. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked name and date on the front endpaper. There are two ink check marks on the title page by the dates. "In 1883, Archbishop Patrick W. Riordan purchased the northwest corner of Van Ness Avenue and O'Farrell Street in Western Addition. Riordan broke ground in December 1885. On May 1, 1887 the archbishop placed the cornerstone. Archbishop Riordan dedicated the edifice to Saint Mary of the Assumption on January 11, 1891. The second cathedral served the Archdiocese of San Francisco for seventy-one years. Established in 1954 it remained a cathedral until 1894 when it became Old St. Mary's a Paulist Church in the heart of Chinatown. A black and white photo, this church survived the 1906 quake and has continued to serve its members for over 150 years.
