Original publisher's blind-stamped green cloth with gilt to spine. All edges gilt. Original yellow chalk-glazed endpapers. 216 species figured. No jacket. Anne Pratt was a highly regarded botanical and ornithological illustrator. She worked on over twenty books illustrated with chromolithographs. Anne Pratt had a long business relationship with the engraver William Dickes, who was particularly skilled in the chromolithograph process. Anne Pratt's works were written in a very accessible form and had the huge merit of being accurate. It is fair to say that she made a huge contribution to the popularising of botany in her day. 35 chromolithograph plates, most illustrating several species. Beautifully drawn and coloured. Green cloth, gilt, sunned edges and spines, lightly bumped corners, head and heel. Vol. 6 top of spine holding but loosely. All edges gilt. (c1865). Former owner's name on front free endpaper. Interior shows occasional minor wear. 4 pages of advertisements at the books' rear. Contains over 300 colour plates of plants, all present with protective tissues. Pratt was an expert in botany in the Victorian era, when flowering plants and ferns were used for decoration as well as being used by pharmacies.
