Very Good/Very Good. 2nd edition, published in august 1942, 2 months after the first edition. the jacket is shelf worn and there are small tears and the spine ends are frayed. some creasing but it still presents well in cellophane.the book has no inscriptions and the binding is excellent. it may well be unread. the book is a little cocked.. So probably a second impression but it just states 'reprinted August 1942'. Fine red cloth covers with very bright gilt titling to the spine. Perhaps a very slight 'lean' to the book - but difficult to assess. In the original publishers dustjacket - NOT price-clipped but some chips to the front corners of the dustjacket and a former owner has reinforced the inside of the d/j spine with masking tape (! ) which doesn't show through and actually has protected the spine - a 0.3 cm only of this tape is neatly on the outside head/tail of the spine, and a small triangle of tape on the rear edge of the spine by the 'F' of 'Frensham'. Exceptionally scarce 1st edition, 1st printing, of Crompton's entertaining - and in places quite dark - wartime novel. In general VG internal order with a spot or two to prelims, but otherwise clean and bright. Neat name and address in ink to front pastedown, dated 1943. Red cloth with bright gilt titling to spine a little bumped and lightly marked. Base of spine is lightly worn and faded. D/j, in removable protective sleeve, is heavily worn with numerous tears and loss to spine and edges of front panel. 8vo. 279pp
