From the introduction: "The second sale of English books printed before 1641 from the Bibliotheca Phillippica includes four works intimately associated with three Tudor and Stuart kings. Henry VIII's Assertio septem sacramentorum adversus Martinum Lutherum, 1521, is the work that earned him the title of Fidei Defensor', borne by all his successors; the copy described below is of particular interest for its contemporary notes in a northern humanistic hand (lot 2596). The copy of his letter to Luther printed by Pynson in 1526 is one of the small number known in the publisher's (or presentation) binding by John Reynes stamped with twin panels of the arms of Christ and those of the King (lot 2597).
