Howard broke into professional writing in 1925 with the sale of "Spear and Fang" to Weird Tales magazine. By the time he died at age 30, Howard had written more than 300 stories, most of which were published during his lifetime but he is best known as the creator of his 22 Conan stories. Many others span realms as diverse as the distant past and the haunted present. During the ten years of his professional career, Howard engaged in voluminous correspondence with his Weird Tales contemporaries Clark Ashton Smith and H.P. Lovecraft, as well as many others.
