The tales are all "somewhat transmuted by her unique mystical perspective" (DIB) and are accompanied by illustrations by Edith Maud Gonne (1866-1953), her close friend and fellow mystic, and one of the boldest figures of the Irish Literary Revival. Alongside her literary endeavours, Young was a member of the Theosophical Society and the Hermetic Society and collected Irish-language folklore about fairies. Her memoirs "record many psychic experiences, both her own and other people's, and she spoke of the travels of her astral body" (ibid.). Maud Gonne, the noted artist, suffragette, and Irish nationalist, shared many of these interests.
