Louis Andre Mamie de Clairac was an 18th-century French military engineer who is primarily remembered for his famous book on the engineering of fortifications. This book, 'The Field Engineer', became a highly sought after book by military construction designers as well as military enthusiasts all over the western world. In this work, Clairac describes not only how to build, but also the purposes of forts and the various shapes used in fort design. The early chapters are especially noteworthy covering topics such as:

· Durable construction material
· Army flanking against forts
· Uses of armed boats against forts

A catalog of the library of the Abbey of Saint-Victor in Marseille, edited by François Rabelais. This esteemed library was dispersed at the close of the 16th century. "It is not only in the catalog of the Saint-Victor library that Rabelais reveals himself as a refined and ingenious bibliographer; his quintessential work, Gargantua and Pantagruel, deserves examination from the perspective of the scattered bibliographic information found within. His library, which has left more traces than one might suppose, will soon regain a kind of existence in a notice where we hope to demonstrate that Rabelais was not only a good bibliographer but also a sincere bibliophile." (from the Preface). The work is supplemented by "Essai sur les bibliothèques imaginaires"… Read More

Musée Royal de Mariemont, 2008. 4to, original printed card covers. 155, (3) pages; illustrated. Fine. Chalon is best known today for his role in the Fortsas hoax in 1840, which involved an obscure auction sale consisting exclusively of "unique" works unknown in the standard bibliographies, which had been dreamed up by Chalon to appeal to particular book collectors of the day—all of whom managed to learn about the sale and many of whom fell for it. His numismatic works focus mostly on medieval issues of the Low Counties, a subject on which he published hundreds of articles. His few book-length works are generally quite rare though still cited.
