In 1602 the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was formed. It was the largest and most powerful trade and shipping company in the world. At its peak it had 40.000 Dutch, other European, and Asian employees, a fleet of more than one hundred ships, and over six hundred stations in its charter area, spanning from the Cape of Good Hope to Japan.
