Signed by Kent in his usual tiny script and numbered #81 of 900 issued on the rear copyright/limitation page. Bright blue binding with silver decoration, clear and prominent. The Slipcase has edgewear, still serviceable. A signed letter on his personal letter head from Kent to Merle Armitage, is attached after the front endpaper, with some repair. Another letter signed Frances Kent is at the rear. Very collectilbe condition with a nice provenance for the signatures. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

A stunning presentation copy, inscribed by Rockwell Kent to William Kittredge, the director of design and typography at The Lakeside Press. Kittredge commissioned Kent to design and illustrate the iconic three-volume aluminum slip-cased 1930 Lakeside Press edition of Moby Dick, which was hailed as a triumph of Machine Age book design. Kittredge's bookplate (rather well designed, of course) on front paste down, and his business card laid in, chipped at one corner. First edition. Number 560 of a limited 900 copies signed by Kent at rear. Bound in publisher's light blue cloth with elaborate silver stamping to front cover and spine, in blue paper covered slip case with matching limitation number on title label on spine. Near Fine with light fading to spine and light general wear to slipcase.

This copy is signed again as a presentation copy from Rockwell Kent, affectionately inscribed: “To my friend, pilot Fred Black from his apprentice, Rockwell Kent, 1930.” Evidence of a removed bookplate on the front pastedown. Laid in is a 8” x 7” black & white photograph taken out of doors of Rockwell Kent, Fred Black, and another unidentified gentleman posed in front of a Stout Air Lines airplane, all of whom are wearing suits with Mr. Kent, alone, wearing a hat looking straight into the camera smiling, with his hands in his pockets. Illustrated throughout with woodcut illustrations by Rockwell Kent. Evidence of a removed bookplate on front pastedown, else very good plus with a small light pink discoloration to the lower left corner of the front cover with very light wear without dust jacket.

Twice inscribed copy of this boldly illustrated shipwreck adventure story, inscribed by Rockwell Kent to Washington D.C. poet Ernest Kroll. The National Gallery of Art notes that, for Rockwell Kent, "exploration and artistic production were twinned endeavors, and his travels to these rugged, rural locales provided inspiration for both his visual art and his writings"; the results of this inspiration are on full display in N BY E. Kent's illustrations, which often depict the feeling of his adventures in Greenland rather than their reality, evoke the dreamy figures of William Blake passed through an Art Deco lens. This binding is absolutely unblemished! In its original plain blue dust jacket in very good condition with tanning to the spine area and a few closed tears all of which have been repaired with archival tape on the verso side of the jacket. Both the book and its dust jacket are contained within the original, very good+ dark blue, paper covered slip case which shows minor wear at its opening and one chip from the paper covering of 3/4" by 1/2". Inscribed, "To Stefansson -- this story of a timid adventure toward his latitudes, is inscribed by his friend, Rockwell Kent, 1935." With Vilhjalmur Stefansson's bookplate and also bookplate of Dartmouth College Library (and small stamp Discarded by Dartmouth College Library), light stains to top of endpaper. The two were good friends and later collaborated on "Unsolved Mysteries of the Arctic" (1938) with Kent supplying illustrations. An excellent association copy.

Jacket has some minor extremity wear, touch of fading to spine, shallow chips at spine ends and fore corner tips, and some slight surface wear. A beautiful copy overall.. Black & white chapter heads, cuts. Rockwell Kent had just finished illustrating his famous edition of Moby Dick for the Lakeside Press when he set out on a voyage to Greenland with a couple of friends. The were shipwrecked, but that didn't stop the adventure. This is that story, superbly written and stunningly illustrated as only Kent could. Printed by William A. Kittredge at the Lakeside Press. Another lovely piece of book design. Uncommon first edition in jacket, damned scarce in this condition.

The dust jacket has edge wear and nicking along with rubbing and tears to the spine ends and flaps. There is one chip missing from the middle spine of the dust jacket.
