John Udell Journal Kept During A Trip Across the Plains Containing an Account of the Massacre of a Portion of His Party by the Mojave Indians in 1859. Los Angeles: N A Kovach, 1946 reprint of Volume III of the California Centennial Series, 87 pages (printed by Premier Press) with an introduction by Lyle H Wright. Includes 7 black and white plates plus a small etched portrait of Udell. Blue boards with bold stamped illustration very good. Pages crisp and clean; binding and spine straight, strong and square. Dust jacket shas chipping and some missing pieces.

Biography of Governor Hardin's life including childhood, marriage and political life, reminiscences of friends, extracts from the press, his writings and a section on the life of Mrs. C. H. Hardin and includes black and white photographs. The copyright page, dedication, and preface are missing from this volume which appears to be an 1896 edition. The first endpaper and frontispiece are loose. The first page is the Introduction is not numbered but the verso is numbered 8 and all subsequent pages and illustration are present with the last page of text numbered 316. Hinges cracked. Previous owner's name stamped first blank page.
