While the author attempted to avoid cluttering the book with Creole expressions he did include definitions of some of the words he used. The story of Guiana including its people, how they lived, hunted, celebrated, the story of the city of gold and includes the story of the tragic loss of Raymond Maufrais who was lost in the Jungle and his body never found, . Bound in stiff paper wraps printed in red and black. A near fine copy.

Melbourne and London: A.N. Smith, 1899. Original Paper Wrps. Fragile. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 139p. Map is laid in. The account is contemporary on the event of the Boer War. Spine has been reglued, clipped corner but text is clean and housed in clam shell box.

A full account of Stanley's five years of prodigious industry in founding the Congo Free State and setting it on its feet for Leopold II of Belgium. Illustrated with over one hundred full-page and smaller illustrations, two large folding maps in rear pockets and several smaller maps, lacks the last page of the preface. Handsomely bound by Bayntun in 3/4 dark brown crushed morocco over brown cloth, raised bands with compartments lettered and decoratively stamped in gilt, top edges gilt. While it lacks the last page of the preface, this set is in remarkable condition. Very nice.

Coimbra, Portugal: Ministerio Das Colonias; Biblioteca e Arquivo Historico, 1918. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 373p. For centuries Portugal did little in colonization but concentrated on the coastal towns. By the late 19th Century they began to devote themselves to full Portuguese administration of the entire country with a goal of developing the mining, agricultural and other interests. Although slavery was not the primary means of obtaining labor, its Portuguese ruling classes fully exploited the opportunity. Here Compte Braz reports on the various developments after the development of the Portuguese Republic in 1910. . An early page shows an African who is merely called a plantation laborer in front of his grass hut. There are folding charts, district maps, etc. A very throrough picture of the period just before World War I. OCLC copies locates copies in Europe along with Yale, Library of Congress, and Capetown.

Then, each countries evaluation based on their present needs. Bound in light blue cloth stamped in gilt, spine plain, original pictorial wrappers bound in, pages toned. A very good copy.

In two volumes, engraved frontispieces and seven other illustrations Vol. 1; xxx, 359pp. contains a table of contents for volume one and a list of plates for both volumes, Vol. 2; iv table of contents, 456pp. A history of the Cape of Good Hope Colony, its inhabitants, religion beliefs, and how to deal with the Convict systems in Southern Africa. The author also proves who started the Kaffir war. A very good set, though ex-library with embossed library stamp and withdrawn stamp to recto of frontispieces, they were tastefully rebound in light brown cloth, double red leather labels gilt, some scattered foxing the frontispieces.

The best edition with many details of the Sudan issues. Slatin was an Austrian officer in the service of the Egyptian government in the Sudan, who got caught up in the Mahdist rebellion. Leading the government forces in Darfur until forced to capitulate, he became a captive, and involuntary adviser, of the Mahdi. After being caught trying to communicate with the government forces in Khartoum he was for a while thrown in irons; being eventually pardoned he ended up in a curious position in the entourage of the Mahdi's successor, Abdullahi*.
