Quarto. xiv, 451 pages, three maps (two large folding), It is from this book we learn that the miners in the Gold Hill District created their own political sub-parties to protect their interest and wrote there would be no banking schemes (which in past cases and caused major frauds on miners in the west). It was not unusual in the long section on the Gold Hill area (132-180) for miners to stake claims and move stakes for a slightly better advantage. The lawlessness and the opportunity for the larger concerns to move in and take control became the rule. Bound in full calf, red and black contrasting spine labels gilt, joints a bit tender, tap to foot of spine, corners worn, front blank nearly detached, internally clean.

Cloth Hardcover. Very Good. Octavo. vi, 313p. index. bibliography. The author is a philosopher but Ellis L. Yochelson of the National Museum of Natural History feels this book should be carefully read by geologists. He bridges the gap between those who see Wegener as old technology in favor of Plate Tectonics as the cutting edge and forgetting the massive studies and detail still contained in Wegener, Suess and Du Toit.

This was a report issued at the request of the National Petroleum Council and has been used not only by the major names in oil but all of those involved in exploration. Folio. 86 leaves with 123 photographic images of the Lake Superior region in what has become the most desirable pictorial view of the entire area before the turn of the 20th century. As early as 1910 Lathrop Harper's rare book catalog noted it was known only as a privately printed work and quite costly presumably for a special presentation. This rare book is filled with photographs and reminiscences by the author of many sites associated with Lake Superior including Profile Rock a sea stack situated just off the north shore of Basswood Island. Profile Rock is associated with some interesting folklore and is now known as "Honeymoon Rock." New York: Charles Scribner's and Son, 1926. First Edition. Octavo. 348 pages, index. 187 illustrations including photographs and maps. From photographs of Yokohama to the San Francisco Earthquake, he also has maps of specific places and much on specific earthquakes. This volume still remains important for that reason but also he in this work endorsed continental drift and offered a mechanism for it. It is no wonder that the next year he reviewed Alexander Du Toit's The Geology of South Africa favorably which placed him in the small minority of North American geoscientist who favored the drift theory. Bound in original red cloth, spine lettering gilt. A very good copy with light wear to spine ends.

Octavo. 299pp., The author, an English geologist and geophysicist presents his mathematical theory of liquid just below the earth's crust, and his theory of faulting and volcanoes. Bound in dark blue-black cloth, spine lettering gilt, slight bumping and wear, inner front hinge a bit fragile. A very good copy.

Boulder, CO: Geolgical Society of America, 2005. Quarto. xi, 881 pages; illustrations (some color). One of the most important and scarce since it was issued in a small print run. The articles by Don L. Anderson in the first section are seminal and essential especially on the history of the plume and plate hypothesis. Also Ocean island basalt geochemistry, continental and oceanic melting anomalies with a large section on planetary volcanism. Issued only in paper this copy is fine and unread without any marks of previous ownership.
