Maughan's time began with visiting of the various sites of religious significance. As he became more acquainted with the Bedouins, he learned much of their lifestyle. While divorce was common to those with vast holdings (it usually required the donation of a she camel to the wife's family), some who were wealthy had as many as 50 divorces. Women were expected to spend their days, cleaning, raising children, dealing with the animals. If the male was present, they might be allowed to drink coffee in the presence of a visitor from outside the tribe. Many interesting observations on the various peoples of Arabia and a nice chapter on Mount Sinai and its monks. Bound in brown cloth, both covers decorated in black, spine lettering gilt and decorated in black, black coated endpapers, a few nicks to joints and corners, light wear to spine ends. A very good copy.

HThe author shows the First Wahhabit Empire in its glory until it was crushed by the Egyptians. There was an interim period under Ibn Rashid but finally the Second Wahhabit Empire and the role of all the international governments who began to play a major role. Bound in maroon cloth, spine lettering gilt, corners bumped,some staining to upper board, previous owner's name in ink, internally clean and bright.

In 1915, Philby was called by the Foreign and Political Department in Mesopotamia to worked with Sir Percy Cox in the building of what was to become modern Iraq. This was the first full-length biography of Ibn Sa'ud who united Arabia and once the vast limitless reserves of oil were discovered made it a leading power in Middle Eastern politics. Also here are intimate details of court life, fasting, political problems, leisure hours, and the pilgrimage to Mecca. Bound in black cloth, spine lettering gilt, three corners bumped, A very good copy in a clipped, edge worn and chipped pictorial dust jacket.

One of the most important publications that have appeared in the history of Persian Islamic art. It is full of hitherto unpublished documents, principally historical inscriptions from the monuments, of which the original text as well as the translation is given, and is illustrated by hundreds photographs, including several hundred of M. Godards own admirable photographs of architectural monuments and details, some of which are exceptionally fine, and by a dozen of his plans and many more other drawings, all done on fine paper. Each book bound in stiff paper wraps lettered and decorated in bklack and red, spine lettered in black, small short closed trear to head of spine of volume one and a bit of wrinkling. A lovely set, near fine.

This work not only is uncommon but it has the very scarce dust jacket. It is dedicated to his majesty King Abdu Azia Iba Sa'ud. William F. Albright considered this one of the most useful in understanding the chronology of the various rules of Arabia. From the library of Edwin Winter Mead with his business card mounted to front free endpaper. bound in 1/4 blue-green cloth over decorative paper covered boards lettered and decorated in red and black, small spot to upper edge of upper board, near fine in the very scarce and fragile glassine dust wrapper designed the same as the boards, with chipping and an old tape mend to foot. A very scarce work in the very elusive dust jacket.

Spencer of the British Museum has prepared the appendices (pages 365-412; index pages 413-433. Harry St. John Philby's initial mastery of Arabic along with the support of Gertrude Bell assisted opening doors into the forbidden territory. Here he has written of his journey in 1932 into the dreaded region (described by Dougherty as a place of terror for most inhabitants of the northern deserts of Arabia). Sir Hamilton Alexander Rosskeen was an Arabic scholar who was born in Alexandria, Egypt but at age 5 sent to England for his education. His major articles on Islam led to his becoming the editor of the Encyclopedia of Islam. When the final Index Volume was issued in 2009, it allowed the most important reference work on all aspects of Islam accessible for the serious reader or scholar. Besides the set being complete in in near fine condition, it also has the supplements called for in OCLC (Glossary and index of technical terms; index of subjects; index of subjects and supplement, Index of Proper Names (ed. He was the Chargé d'Affaires of Morocco from 1941 to 1945. He served as United States Ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 1946 to 1950 and held a concurrent post as Ambassador to North Yemen. An important section on Zionism, President Truman and the Palestine issue resulting in the United Nation recognition of Israel. Philby's forty years in Arab society, surrounded by a culture that allows him to describe life in the Arabian desert with remarkable insights. What happened as enormous wealth from the West flowed into the hands of its leaders led to corruption. The National Geographic President said that Philby was the greatest Arabian traveler of his generation. Bound in blue cloth, spine lettering gilt, corners bumped, no names or bookplates. A very nice copy.

John Kelman had written important books on biblical aspects of geology and archaeology. He has integrated many ancient histories of the region and for this work George Adam Smith consulted with him to the part surrounding Palmyra. Bound in cream decorative cloth decorated in light blue and light green and white, lettered in black decorative spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, spine darkened, light wear to corners with light finger soiling, rear inner hinge had been reglued in spots. A very good copy.

Goha is a popular comic hero in Muslim regions of Africa and Asia, found under various names including Juha and Abu Nuwas in the jokes of North Africa and Southwest Asia. Goha is a good-natured member of the learned class of ulama' and imams (a group often satirized for their foibles), whose stories reflect Islamic values and folk wisdom. He often rides a donkey, is sometimes a rural and sometimes an urban figure who displays both poor and middle class attributes. He is an Everyman, underdog, and hero, both learned and stupid, who provides a mirror of the life and the concerns of ordinary people.
