Description:
Edinburgh: William Tait, 1846. Octavo. Frontispiece, vi-xvi, 775 pages. Abridged from the dictionary and supplement, in four volumes in quarto. John Jamieson (1759-1838) began his work on the uniqueness of the Scottish language in his work the Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language. As a Scot living in London, he realized how different his native language was from the Augustan language of early 19th century England. His use of examples makes this a very useful volume in considering Scotticisms versus the English as spoke in London. A very handsome copy bound in full tan polished calf, boards doubled ruled in gilt, raised bands, red morocco spine label gilt, all other compartments fully gilt decorated, all edges marbled with matching marbled endpapers, from the library of Lillian Drake Whitehouse with her bookplate. A clean bright copy.

Porto: Livraria Chardron De Lelo, 1913. Paper Wraps. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Portuguese Language. 228p. The author was Portuguese but spent much time in Italy where he wrote this classic poem. It was devoted to Saint Mary of Egypt (344?-421?). She left her home at age 12 and came to Alexandria where for seventeen years she was a prostitute. She embarked on a ship bound for the holy land though not out of devotion but assuming here was an area where she could satisfy her insatiable lust. While hoping to seduce devoted pilgrims in Jerusalem, she was struck by a force that led to her conversion and for forty-seven years she lived in the desert subsisting entirely on herbs. The poem is dedicated to her.

Description:
London: C. Clement, 1824. Octavo. no pagination. [240] pages. While in his day he was known as important books on the English countryside, his contribution to grammar in the early Nineteenth Century is significant. He is closer to the descriptivist approach than the proscriptive approach than his contemporaries. His aim was to reach not the social elite of England, but the everyday person who was literate but unsure of how to write in an organized fashion. In one sense, his work is a major factor in the eras move to understanding linguistics. Bound in 3/4 black morocco over cloth, raised bands with title gilt within one compartment, some soiling to boards, rubbing to upper joint. contemporary ink note to front end papers. A very good copy.
