London: Printed and Sold By the Booksellers of London and Westminster, 1691. Small Octavo. 10 pages, John Ashton was an official in the royal household and Jacobite conspirator who in 1688 lent James II's government 12,500 pounds but he distributed money for the Jacobian plot and he was captured at Dover in 1690 and he was linked to the plot to restore Richard Graham, Viscount Preston as James's secretary of state. He was tried on January 19, 1691 and found guilty but instead of facing the crueler parts of the death sentence, he merely died by hanging. Some toning and staining.

Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1926. First Edition. Small Quarto. 304 pages. Illustrated. Not only has the author assiduously noted the order of the earliest English language books on the law, but he has tabulated the libraries where they can be found. As the leading professor of Law at Harvard in the first half of the 20th Century, he sought to uncover the roots of Anglo-American law by looking at the earliest books. The appendices show images referred to in the heart of the book and also the distinguishing printers mark. A very useful work on the study of early English law and printing through the year 1550. Whether it the well-known printers such as Caxton, Wynkyn de Worde, he also has included the lesser known printers who are often overlooked. Bound in brown cloth, spine lettering gilt, corners lightly bumped. A very good copy.

(American Bar Association, Chicago, 2015). First Edition. Small Quarto. 541 pages, index. A major study by the leading scholar on the history of the Bill of Rights. It deals with the early history of rights in Europe and also what happened before 1791 that led to James Madison's first draft of each specific clause of the Bill of Rights. It also traces it to contemporary influences as it is applied to film, sports, literature, religion, and popular culture. The illustrations help to place every issue in context. The book is also inscribed by McWhirter to G. Robert Blakey, who was the head of the Law Department at Notre Dame and chief counsel on the House Committee on assassinations. A fine copy in its original condition.

St. Paul: West Publishing Co, 1979. Large Thick Quarto. xiv, 1511 pages. Words are a lawyer's best weapons and when properly used add to effectiveness and profits. Black's format is unbeatable. The search for complete and accurate legal definitions is facilitated by well-chosen typography arranged on uncrowded and expertly designed pages. Besides the pronunciation of Latin, there is a guide to pronunciation symbols -- Text of Definitions -- Appendixes and virtually every phase and idea in American and even English law. Bound in blue cloth lettered and decorated in gilt, spine lettering gilt, long previous owner's gift inscription, a few pages at the end with corners bent, a good copy.

Lutetiae Prisorum: Sumptibus Frobrt Fouet, Via Iacobaea Sub Insigni Temporis & Occasionis, 1624. Folio. Charles Dumoulin (or Dumolin, Latinized Molinaeus) was noted for his works on jurisprudence and all aspects of Roman law as well as canon and customary law claiming that he was the chief expert on law over anyone in France or Germany. His learnedness was mixed with a desire to upset the system; consequently, he became a Protestant and attacked the Council of Trent which led to his imprisonment in Paris. The Printer's device sweeping through history is accompanied with the Latin phrase HANC ACIEM SOLA RETUNDIT VIRTUS or in one translation "Virtue alone withstands this blade". Volume I lacks the original title page, volume two with title page present. Bound in 1/4 calf over paper covered boards, red leather labels gilt, spine ends chipped, text without foxing.

In two volumes, 2nd edition, revised and improved with large additions by the author.746pp., (1)pp. appendix, and 747-1575pp., (92)pp. tables and an alphabetical index. Perhaps the highest authority on Anglican church law, still referred to in ecclesiastical proceedings. Begins with general exposition of the state of laws and powers of the Church, but the greatest portion concerns the organization and explication of ecclesial law. Appendix of instrument, ancient and modern. Edmund Gibson, successively Bishop of Lincoln and London, established himself in the controversy whether the lower house of the church could lawfully prorogue itself and call sittings without the archbishop's summons. Then the Chaplain of the archbishop of Canterbury, Gibson fought for episcopal rights against the lower house. While known for his discourses on Newton, Leibnitz and Descartes, in 1707 he became the regius chair of public law and the law of nature and nations at Edinburgh. This classic dealt with the complexities of how treason should be prosecuted. David Hume held him in regard, the entrusted Erskine with the final decisions on his Essays, Morals and Political. Bound with A form and method of commoners, in cases of high treason and misprision of high treason. Bound in contemporary paneled calf, slightly raised bands, spine plain, light wear to corners, small splits to upper joints at head with chipping (not broken through) early owner's name (?). Lugduni; 1555 and 1567: Ad Salamandrae, Apud Sennetonious Fratres. Folio. Pierre Rebuffi was the jurist whose expertise was in canon law and also defending monarchical law. While serving as Professor of law at Paris, Francis I summoned him to work on the Roman Rota and he was retained by Henry II. These are the core volumes on understanding constitutional thought in sixteenth-century France. In three volumes. Volume I and II were published in 1555. Volume III was published in 1567, all printed by the Sennetonios fratres (brothers) with volumes 3 having a different and larger printer's device. Volume I (unnumbered) of the three-volume set. In this volume, there are seven treatises each with its own title page though the pagination is consecutive. Quarto. 143 pages (unpublished manuscript). Oliver B. Jones was a prominent member of the Hamilton County Bar and served on the Ohio Court of Appeals from 1913-1919. While his day book appears as a ledger, it covers details relating to the case of Elizabeth Kuerze vs. the German Western Bank relative to the anti-German hysteria that led the school board to drop German as an elective in their language program. Nevertheless, the school board had deposited $800,000 in the Western German Bank [which now changed its legal name to the Western Bank]. Meanwhile, Robert M. Kuerze died with 2900 shares in Gerke Brewing which went to his widow, Elizabeth Kuerze. As the Corporation dissolved, the court appointed receiver ruled in her favor that she was to receive $120, 931. It was complicated since $60,000 from the bank was supposed to be paid to Gerke Brewing.
