Description:
Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1883. Quarto. xiv, 451 pages, three maps (two large folding), It is from this book we learn that the miners in the Gold Hill District created their own political sub-parties to protect their interest and wrote there would be no banking schemes (which in past cases and caused major frauds on miners in the west). It was not unusual in the long section on the Gold Hill area (132-180) for miners to stake claims and move stakes for a slightly better advantage. The lawlessness and the opportunity for the larger concerns to move in and take control became the rule. Bound in full calf, red and black contrasting spine labels gilt, joints a bit tender, tap to foot of spine, corners worn, front blank nearly detached, internally clean.

Description:
Once Porfirio Diaz became President of Mexico, he proceeded to limit the tax liability for investors. At the same time, he began a process of protecting mining interest against both Indian and bandit raids. By 1890 American investors began to aggressively add mining, railroads and ranching as a new "gold rush" mentality developed. These two documents from 1904 show two things: (1) the ways mining was still expanding; and (2) the U.S. corporation officers remained in Los Angeles, but the operation depended upon a connection in Arizona Territory at Tucson. The agent who recorded the latter document was the legendary Charles A. Shibell, whose checkered career began with Carleton's California expedition and involved his serving as Sheriff in Tucson and appointing Wyatt Earp as Deputy Sheriff in Tombstone (since the growing town at the time was still in Pima County). In the disputed 1880 election with R.H. Paul, he won the San Simone precinct by 103-1 though they had only 10 eligible voters. The end result… Read More

Description:
Denver: Np, 1889. First Edition. Octavo. Color die-cut booklet, with images. 48 pages of which 45 are color sketches of floats designed for the festival. With Colorado facing a severe depression from the Silver Crash of 1893, Major Hooper of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad proposed a festival that would be a western version of Mardi Gras. They created an elite secret society known as the Slaves of the Silver Serpent who would bring in planners from the Mardi Gras designers as well as those who followed the idea of floats in the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. They chose the name Festival of Mountain and Plain and it would emphasize the vast wealth of Colorado's agricultural and mineral resources. It began its first festival in 1895 but it became a great success so that by 1898 (the Fourth Annual Festival), it drew people from all over the West and even with special train rates from the eastern U.S. With reports of up to 150,000 attendees, the trains were overloaded and people often had to stay extra… Read More

Many illustrations providing how oil technology developed with a history of the down-hole tools and dozens of photographic illustrations as well as drill string components and the rig floor. With the same equipment today, oil can still be produced without the problem of poor recovery causes. The last chapter provides the basis for deep sea offshore drilling along the Gulf coast of Texas and Louisiana but the author does not deal a lot with possible safety concerns but does emphasize the importance of regular maintenance because of salt water's problems. Bound in black pictorial gilt cloth depicting an oilrig. Some spotting to rear board and owner's name to upper fore-edge. A very good copy.
