Salt Lake City: Deseret News Company, 1890. Quarto. 480p. Includes the articles on Pioneer Women of Utah (with steel engraving of three of the pioneer women). Biographies of Harriet Page Wheeler Young (who was wife of Lorenzo Dow Young, Brigham's Young's brother), the family fled Nauvoo just after death of Joseph Smith, crossing the frozen Mississippi River and settling in Winter Quarters. Also Clara Decker Young who at age 15 married Brigham Young at Nauvoo also fleeing to Winter Quarters also including the life of Ellen Sanders Kimball. The second article on the Pioneer Women of Utah lists all the early 144 men who were the founders. Interestingly enough three on the list were noted as (colored). Also several articles on "the Morrisite War" and H.W. Lawrence, Territorial Marshal along with deputy Marshal R.T. Burton. It was the Pioneer Women of Utah who built a monument on behalf of those who died in the battle. It is interesting since the articles were aimed to inspire youth on… Read More

Description:
Berlin: Kirche Jesu Christi Der Heiligen Der Letzen Tage, 1937. Octavo. 140p. Only copy in OCLC at Brigham Young University. Joseph M. Dixon's important article on "Mormons in the Third Reich" shows how the church with its estimated 14,000 members managed to survive in Nazi Germany. This item on the Mormon view of the 10 Commandments published in 1937 is important not only for noting its Berlin publishing office but for the list of the German language books available at that time; however, the references to Zion and Israel meant that by 1938 and 1939 the Nazi's began to curtail LDS activities. The footnote at the bottom of p. 2-3 of the catalog notes this applies to missionaries in all districts. Originally scouting was permitted but now only the Hitler Jugend could be allowed with a program for boys. By early 1939 the suppression began and all LDS missionaries fled Germany in August just days before Hitler invaded Poland. This would appear to be among the last LDS items printed in the Third Reich.… Read More

Following Smith's death, the council met in Nauvoo under Brigham Young's leadership from February 1845 to January 1846.
