Description:
. M.B. Marcell of Oregon was the photographer who had already photographed the 1911 Pendleton Round up. He was famous for taking images of the horse both at his success and also of those shots as the horse dislodged him. He came in 1914 to take images of the Miles City Round-Up which was becoming the premier event of the period just before World War I. The event was so popular that the local newspapers blamed the loss of the baseball team in two games due to three players who were rodeo participants who at least temporarily forsook the team. The four photograph images with details etched in white on the postcard with each identified as being by Marcell and Miles City round Up 1914 are: (1) Unloading Time (as cowboy is thrown from bronco); (2) Spinning Horse (with cowboy holding cloth to his face); (3) Ben Ford on Moose Bay [his number 53 is plainly seen on photo]; and (4) Good Night I'm Gone (as cowboy is being thrown to ground]. A very nice collection from what was one of the great rodeo events… Read More

Description:
Layton, UT; (1995): Gibbs Smith. First Edition. Quarto. 104p. Inscribed by the author and photographer. This work nominated for a Pulitzer Price has struck a chord with both the Western ranch owner and the ecologist. There is a balance that has been praised by major voices in both traditions. The author takes ten ranches and shows how the richness of the Western tradition that shows how major ranches understand their care of the land which is restorative can preserve the environment (as Robert M. Miller, DMV writes in the Western Horseman: "Ranchers and environmentalists have far more compatible goals than would be users of the land for other purposes." Dan Dagget inscribes: For turning battleground into common ground." Jay Dusart (inscribed to Dick) writes: "with all good wishes from and far the range." Bound in stiff pictorial paper wraps. Near fine.

Description:
Circa 1900. Photograph postcard measuring "11 x 4" with 9 cowboys and 2 chuck wagons, followed by horses and cattle. The card was mailed January 20, 1910 from Montana with note on message part of card: "a picture of the Long X Roundup taken from life." Both a nice photograph of a roundup that typically would cover the south half of Powder river County, Montana and the north half of Campbell County, Wyoming. The Long X Ranch was the largest and most famous cattle ranch in McKenzie County (North Dakota Hall of Fame). The Reynolds Brothers from Texas bought it and soon after Theodore Roosevelt built his ranch at about the same time in the region. The Long X had the reputationof doing business in the most economical way of any ranching concern in the West. Like TR they lost a large part of their herds to disease and a cruel winter, they eventually sold the business to the Converse Cattle Company. Much of their land is now part of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Nearby Killdeer is the hub… Read More

Evetts Haley and his wife, Roz. original unclipped printed clear mylar jacket priced $10. In 1885, at the age of ten, D. D. Parramore studied art with an itinerant artist in the four-year-old town of Abilene, Texas. Although he displayed considerable talent, he was discouraged from sketching and painting by his father. He was allowed no more instruction in what was then considered an unmanly occupation, especially for the son of an enterprising frontier cattleman, Heeding his father's wishes, Pharramore homesteaded land and bought surrounding sections in West Texas. After his retirement from active ranching, however, he returned to his early love of drawing. In the mid-1930s he began a series of pencil sketches to entertain and instruct his two young grandchildren. The activity grew into a satisfying hobby, which he pursued until his death in 1946.
