A sharp and surprisingly tight copy bound in pictorial paper wraps, scattered foxing on edges, lfaint dampstains to upper corner on last five pages (marginal). Slight chipping to foot. with a couple of small chips and a tear to spine.

The chapter on "protection men" tells the story of those who enforcers who were enemies of the cattle thieves. They generally didn't like to kill the rustlers but it went with the job. Much firsthand information on the Matador Land and Cattle Company and assistance from J. Frank Dobie. Bound in brown pictorial cloth depicting a cowhand on horse over seeing the cattle in black, lettering in black, previous owner's name, minor bumping to two corners, some spots of black to upper board. Van Nuys, California: Jack and Rosalie Renolds, 1956. 4 pages. Printed on outside of folded double leaf uncut at top. Powell writes of the remarkable joy of giving as evinced in Dobie's gifts to the world of literature. "There was never a more locale-lving Texan than Dobie, and he is also one our best world citizens since Franklin and Jefferson." In Dobie's desire for giving, he asks for rain. These were years of a Texas drought where Dobie had written: "The drought has entered my soul. I can't go out to Cherry Springs any more and feel free; the springs are all drived up and the wild cerries and other trees dead and dying." A very beautiful appreciation for Dobie by one of the major writers on the world of the literature of Texas and the Southwest.

[Little, Brown and Co, Boston, 1959]. Approx. 9 1/2 x 6 1/2. 1 folded sheet [4] pages. Little, Brown issued this broadsheet written by George Fuermann of the Houston Post on the publication of Dobie's book, Ben Lilly Legend. It has also been cataloged under the title: J. Frank Dobie: not at all a normal man. Dobie writes that he was raised in southeast Texas where he learned the word vaquero before he heard the term "cowboy". A very nice thoughtful look at one of the best writers on Texas and the greater Southwest.

Gillett, Six Years with the Texas Rangers, 1875 to 1881 (Austin, 1921) and Albert Bigelow Paine, Captain Bill McDonald, Texas Ranger (1909) These are the most important early books on the Texas feuds, Douglas deals first with the Regulators and the Moderators, then, the Taylor-Sutton feud, The San Elizario War and finally, the last section with Horrell-Higgins Affair, the Mason County War and the Jaybirds and Woodpeckers. The frontispiece is of H. Clay Pleasants, the fighting district judge who helped establish law and order in DeWitt County. He devoted a fortune in building up the University of Texas and along the way wrote a marvelous history of the South.
