Engraved trade advertising letterpress advertising the services of Thomas Beck, Wholesale Stationer, Engraver, Printer, Lithographer, Die Sinker and Manufacturer of Copying Machines, 81 Cheapside, Two Doors West of Old Jewry, London. A London newspaper advertisement for Thomas Beck Co. appeared in December 1846. With an engraved vignette of dock workers at an English/Australian? dock sealing crates marked "Gold" , "Tallow" and "Wool", with tall masted ships & a steamship visible in the distance; elaborate engraved borders. Printed on laid paper, blank at verso. 4 1/4 x 4 3/4". Slightly marked.

New York: Koerner & Hayes, 1898. Good -. Color illustrated blotter, with dramatic illustration of the USS Katahdin ramming a larger vessel. This was an ironclad harbor defense ship, an innovative design meant to ride very low in the water and to be used purely as a ram, with no torpedoes on board. In 1898 the US Navy was preparing for an impending war with Spain; the Katahdin was attached to the North Atlantic Squadron and protected the coast from New England to Norfolk. Frederick Ludlam fertilizer company was based at 108 Water Street, New York and its slogan was "Sun, Rain and Cecrops Make Everything Grow". Blank at verso, with some ink spotting which does not bleed through. Color lithograph with text printed in blue. Slight foxing & a bit dusty, the lower left corner with very small chip. Printed on paper 6 1/4 x 3 1/2"

Vibrantly colored and beautifully detailed chromolithographic advertising poster depicting the goddess in pale blue robes, the moon behind her head like a halo, with an infant on her lap, a woman standing behind her with a flask, and a child at her feet stepping from a lotus blossom. This is Guan Yin depicted in her role as fertility goddess. With title in Chinese above and on either side of the illustration, and text in English below. English text reads "Importers & Exporters, China Art Goods, All Kinds of Wares. China Emporium, San Francisco California. Address 733-735 Grant Avenue, Phone China 2285". All text printed in red. China Emporium was a San Francisco California importer & exporter, dealing in wholesale and retail of Chinese art goods, porcelain, silk embroidery, silver and brass. Large poster measures 20 3/4 x 30 1/2". Small chip at bottom edge, slightly affecting the word "California", otherwise very good condition.

Description:
London, 1904. Very good overall. A color advertising trade card for the "Splendid Iron Clipper, Cimba", with text and the ship's flag printed in red and dark blue, and displaying five different type fonts. The Cimba was built in 1878 in Aberdeen, Scotland. Cimba sailed for 20 years between Sydney and London carrying wool, and also to Port Jackson. She was an impressive heavily rigged ship, 223 feet long, with green hull with gold scrolls, white bulwarks and yellow stripe, with lion figurehead. Her first captain, J. Fimster, served until 1895; he was succeeded by Captain J. W. Holmes who served until 1906, when the ship was sold to a Norwegian outfit. The card is dated 1904 and lists her berth at South West India Dock; the managers listed are Wincott, Cooper & Co. Very mild foxing at lower right edge. Printed in 2 colors, one side only. 4 3/4 x 3 1/2". Not found on Trove.

Each page has numerous fine chromolithograph portraits of animals, including the kangaroo & the platypus, recorded as a "Mullingong". Arbuckles was a coffee brand-name in the US in the late 1800's and published a number of these finely printed albums in which they would include a promotional page on coffee, in this instant on the back cover. A highly collected series in America. Front wrapper foredge quite chipped, with the bottom edge ruffled and a closed tear & slt. stain at the top; 1st page has sml. corner chips. Auckland, 1885. A large oblong albumen image of an early American importer of kerosene oil, which was not readily available at the time, to New Zealand. The image depicts 2 large buildings fronting a major street corner. The two story building at the left advertises kerosene oil on the front facade, and the one story warehouse building at the right, which encompasses the entire corner, advertises kauri gum. Three horse drawn carts laden with large boxes are waiting in the street. A further shop sign, Robt. Furness & Co is visible in the distance. Arnold, Cheney and Co was the agent for New Zealand of the Colonial Oil Co, formed in New York to supply New Zealand and Australian markets with oil. John Robert Hanna was born ca 1850 in Ireland and sailed on the clipper ship 'Ganges' arriving in Auckland in 1865. Hartford, CT, 1890. Very good overall. Handsome color lithograph advertisement featuring a double hemisphere world map superimposed with a large axe head printed in relief for a very dramatic effect. Its blade is highlighted in silver gilt. Australia is printed in green at the bottom right, shown with the states delineated (Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, NSW and Victoria) but lacks Tasmania as the "c" in company occupies that space. The headline printed in red at the top, with "The Best is the Cheapest. Collins & Co. Hartford, Conn, USA" printed at the bottom. Collins & Co., founded in 1824-1826, built a factory at South Canton CT, and became one of the leading manufacturers of edged tools; their axes became known as the 'Standard of the World". 12 x 19", embossed, with 2 punched holes at top edge for string cord to hand the plaque.
