Newburgh, New York, 1824. Paperback. Very good condition. A bank passbook for Silas K. Goodale (1798-1880) with the Bank of Newburgh, New York, the very first locally chartered bank in the city. All but two pages are blank. The accounting begins on February 14, 1824 and continues to November 29, 1825. The handwritten name "Silas K. Goodale" appears on a small piece of paper stuck to the cover. The village of Newburgh was incorporated in 1800. Located on the Hudson River it grew quickly and became a major center of commerce from 1850 on. With a well developed transportation network, Newburgh was an important steamboat river stop and attracted many businesses whose ships engaged in international trade. The Bank of Newburgh was chartered in 1811 and for twenty three years was the only banking institution in the area; it also had a branch in Ithaca New York which operated for 12 years. 4 x 6 1/4". Peach marbled paper wraps, with title at front cover on hand written paper label laid down.

Tasmania, 1829. Ephemera. Very good condition. A bank check made out to Mr. Wilkinson for Five pounds 17 shillings Sterling, to be transferred to account of James Kelly. On verso, manuscript accounting. In 1829, James Kelly [1791-1859], was most likely pursuing a successful business in whaling, banking and insurance after resigning from government service. "Kelly was an Australian explorer, sealer, pilot and harbourmaster, born in Parramatta. He travelled extensively including circumnavigating Van Diemen's Land, and discovering Port Davey and Macquarie Harbour. Kelly was appointed pilot and harbourmaster at the Derwent and later as pilot he was engaged in whaling and with additional land ownership he became an important citizen in Hobart. Kelly suffered heavy personal and shipping losses in the 1830s and by the 1840s forcing him to assign his property to creditors. He later accept employment from the port authorities again. New York: American Bank Note Co., 1876. Ephemera. Good + overall. Striking bank note engraved advertising broadside for the Great Falls Company, to be distributed at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, engraved by the leading high security engraving and printing firm of the day, the American Bank Note Company. The engraving company was founded in 1795; it produced superior quality stock and bond certificates, currency and postage stamps. In 1858 the company was headquartered in New York City at 55 Wall Street, close to its financial clients. During the Civil War American Bank Note helped produce $60 million worth of notes authorized by Congress & known as "greenbacks"; it also produced paper money for the Confederate government. After the war it supplied bank notes and security paper for 115 foreign nations. Very good condition. 4 checks from the Bank of Newburgh dated 1838-9, plus a 47pp history of the bank entitled, The National Bank of Newburgh. A History of the First Century of this Banking Association under its various Charters, published by its Board of Directors to commemorate the completion of One Hundred Years of its existence 1811 - 1911. Checks 6 1/4 x 2 3/4" cream paper, black text and ink, all with perforated stamp, toned. Brown stiff paper wraps, embossed title on front, small 8vo, 47pp, 9 plates b&w photo illustrations including 2 banknote portraits, corners bumped, otherwise fine.

New York: Irving Press, 1920. Staplebound. Otherwise good +. A booklet describing the origin, history and progress of the bank. 8 1/2 X 6", 23pp, tan card covers with text in brown and orange, staplebound. Cover dusty with some marks on lower front, internally clean.

When issued in 1800, William Birch's prints of Philadelphia formed the 1st series of views of any American city. As such they are of great historical importance. The superior quality of the engraving nicely suggests a charming view of Philadelphia life at the time, when it was a prominent city in the Western Hemisphere. Second (1804) or Third Edition, 1809.11 x 9 1/2" & margins, watermarked paper, black & white, as issued, very good condition.

Harper's Weekly, 1890. Ephemera. Very good overall. A woodcut print from the Harper's Weekly, 1890. Amusing series of views from above, caricatures of "Great Gun with his two brokers, Checkermore and Smeevy", who are premeditating a "terrific onslaught on Chickweed and Aguardiente preferred." 7 x 10 1/2 on 8 1/2 by 14 1/2 paper, with the amusing text on the same page.

St. Louis: M. Niedner, 1859. Third edition - Enlarged. Hardcover. Good + overall. An early work by Eastman, with ads at the back for his commercial schools in St. Louis and Oswego, New York. After the Civil War, Eastman relocated to Poughkeepsie, NY where he founded yet another business school. This treatise discusses the history of money, gold, banking, and then discusses counterfeiting- the paper, engraving, plates, lathe work, parallel ruling, signatures, imprints, landscapes, etc. Slim 8vo, 54pp, 5pp ads, endpapers lt. foxed. Orig. red cloth blind stamped "Money" on the front board (faintly rubbed). Boards a bit marked, 2 sml. ink marks, slt. overall marking, spine the faintest bit worn at head and foot, overall good+ binding.

Reprint of the 1923 edition, originally penned in 1896. Sml 8vo, printed paper boards, gilt text on front, 68 pp. Internally clean and bright, spine strong. VGC+.

Inside 'Welcome to Japan' describes the prewar name of the bank, Sumitomo, and goes on to describe the services of the current bank: Exchange Business, Domestic Circular Letter of Credit, Selling World Travellers Cheques and Circular Letters of Credit, and Miscellany. With a b&w photo of the Bank of Osaka. Pencil accounting down blank fold. Title in black at front cover. 4 x 9" folds open to 7 3/4 x 9"

Third edition. 8vo, xv, 139pp, 18 engraved plates, complete., top edge gilt, rest uncut. Green & gilt cloth. Spine a bit discolored to olive green with sml. nick near front hingeboards a little markedfront inner hinge bit loose. A handsome production, clearly privately printed for the Bank.

Sydney: F H Booth and Son, 1931. Wraps. Pamphlet printed in Sydney, with much Australian content. The autor concludes: "In all this Australia can help and help greatly, and should set about it at once. It is not right to complain to London that she has left off lending new money to Australia, that is the business of investors there. It is not right to refuse to pay interest according to our contracts..." 8vo, 36pp, b&w ill. Brown paper wraps with title in black at front cover; staple bound. Very good.
