Newburgh, NY, 1832. Very good condition. The inhabitants of the Hudson River town cite their growing prosperity in a request to the Legislature for an additional bank, with much specific information on their economic growth. These many examples include: that the town employed 7 sloops and three steam boats to New York; that the amount of goods sold in the town amounted to $900,045; and that the value of property shipped out of Newburgh amounted to $1,200,000. Newburgh boasted numerous woollen (sic), cotton, paper, and flour manufactories as well as 3 iron foundries, and 13 brick yards. The Bank of Newburgh, founded in 1811, had capital of only $140,000, but the bank paid yearly dividends of 7 to 9%. The petition also cites the recent rapid growth of surrounding towns, including Glenham, Matteawan, Walden, Cornwall and Cold Spring. The document dated January 1, 1832. A few old folds, with some short splits, one reinforced with archival tape and not affecting text. 7 3/4 x 13"

The engravings provide some lovely Bartlett views of the Hudson River Valley, such as View From West Point, Crow's Nest from Bull Hill, View From Ruggle's House, Newburgh, Peekskill Landing, and Indian Falls near Cold Spring. Arguably Bartlett's most famous work. He visited Canada and the United States repeatedly and the illustrations show many of the principal cities of North America as well as the most famous scenic vistas of the day. Begun in 1758, The Annual Register was an annual survey of the past year from a British perspective, usually focusing on history, politics and literature. The volume for 1791 with Chapter VII and Chapter IX devoted to the French Revolution, with the first item titled "Exultation of the French at the Confederation"; also "Effects produced by the French Revolution in various parts of Europe" and "Plan for the Deliverance of the King -- Fails". Armorial bookplate "Prime" inside the front board, a noted Hudson River collector, and the ink notation "from Gouv. Kemble" dated July 1904. This is presumably the son of Gouverneur Kemble, the founder of the West Point Foundry at Cold Spring, New York, which played a critical role in arms production during the Civil War, and was known as the "Patriarch of Cold Spring". Steel engraving with original wash color. Includes names of all the property owners, roads in the towns, driveways, streams and ponds. The map also includes an advertising directory for businesses in Philipstown and Garrison. Names included in the directory are: Chas Ferris, attorney; Simonson House, hotel; Chas. Boyd, drugs; Martin Davenport, Dry goods; E.P. Dykeman, dry goods; W.A. Louisville, KY: Richmond and Lousville Medical Journal Book and Job Steam Press, 1878. Wraps. Mr. Livingston's signed copy of a pamphlet pertaining to Florida as a suitable "health resort" for Northern patients, by Frederick Lente MD. Dr. Lente (1823 - 1883) was the primary surgeon at the West Point Foundry, Cold Spring NY, during the Civil War. He served at the Foundry from 1851 to 1870; later he was head of gynecology and children's health at the University of the City of New York, and founder of the American Academy of medicine. Livingston was a member of a family of the Hudson River Valley, which at one point owned some 900,000 acres of land and about three dozen mansions in the area, giving the area the nickname "Livingston Valley". 8vo, 56pp, errata slip bound in. Printed paper wrappers. Wrappers chipped at edges and marked. Good + condition, but fragile. OCLC: 1648852.

A sweeping view of the Hudson Highlands from the east side looking toward "Crow Nest", with Constitution Island in the middle ground and West Point in the distance. Crow's Nest is depicted with steep imposing cliffs plunging to the river, which is serene and glassy; the view is framed by three twisted tree trunks. B & w steel engraving, with W. H. Bartlett at the lower left below the image, and G. K. Richardson at the lower right.

An unknown photographer took this view of Garrison Landing from the Dock House looking down the length of the Landing, with the Garrison Art Center, the Prescott's (with small boathouse outside), with a huge quantity of fire wood piled up for the ferry's use. With "American Scenery" and "Hudson River" at either end of the card. Albumen print, approx. 7 x 3.5", mounted on card, with rubbed corners, a little marked.

Other locations include the Hudson River Rail Road, Robinson House, Garrison's, Indian (Ind.) Cold Spring, NY, 1864. A collection of 16 hair samples collected by the Maloy Family, plus 2 handwritten notes dated 1842 and 1862. Each hair sample is folded in paper, sometimes newsprint, with names written in pen on the outside. Names include: Daniel Meloy, James Meloy, B. Meloy, Frances, George, Elisabeth, Amos, Lovenda, 1859 Charles Haight, Roleph R. Rose (?) , plus 6 more with no names. Charles Byron Haight (1835-1895) is buried in the Cold Spring Cemetery, but no Maloy's are found in any of the Cold Spring cemeteries. One note dating 1862 written to a Meloy asking for chestnut fence railings signed by AM Baxter (?). The other note is dated "November the 31, 1862 Please Mr. Cooth (or Cook) let the Bearer Daniel Tomkins have my watch. Charles D. (?) Maloy and James Maloy."
