1919. Ephemera. Two letters, one on Library of Congress letterhead dated July 22, 1919, stating that the "Chief of our Order Division (Purchasing Department)" reports that Lewis and Clark's (sic) "Expedition to the source of the Missouri" Philadelphia, 1809, two volumes sells at auction from $5.00 to $20.00..." A note dated July 21 from Charles F. D. Belden, Librarian, of the Boston Public states that copies sold "lacking the map sold for $5.50 in 1917 and at other times copies have brought $25.50, $20.50... " The valuation was requested by Mrs. Edward Henroten of Cherry Plain, NY. She also asked for valuations for Harmon's Journal 1820. It's hard to ascertain what edition Mrs. Henrotin had, as the the first account was published by David M'Keehan in Pittsburgh in 1807 in a single volume, and the first account published in Philadelphia was by Matthew Carey in 1810, also in a single volume. Nonetheless, intriguing threads from the trail of Lewis & Clarke.

Includes both B&W and color photos, list of personnel, stories of triumphs and setbacks. Two color sections deal with helicopters and science experiments. Taped in newspaper article. 4to, approx. 200pp (unnumbered), pictorial boards, cover dusty, blue title on spine, yellow title on front.

Philadelphia: Joseph Kite, & Walton, 1848. Very good condition. Articles extracted from 'The Friend. A Religious and Literary Journal', Volume XXI, 1848. The four articles entitled "Australia", on explorations by George Grey, including Gov. George Grey Russell (51/2 columns), Henry Stuart (3 1/2 columns), and Edward John Eyre and Capt. Sturt. Not found in Trove.

Full title: An Account of the Voyages Undertaken by the Order of His present Majesty for making discoveries in the Southern hemisphere successively performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Captain Cook, in the Dolphin, the Swallow,and the Endeavour drawn up from the Journals which were kept by the several Commander, and from the Papers of Sir Joseph Banks. Two volumes of a four volume set. However these are the volumes that deal with the New Zealand and Australia section of the voyage. Vol 3. (ii),iii, 241pp, 4 copper engraved plates Vol 4. iv, 245pp 2 copper plates including the fold out plate of the Endeavour beached at Endeavour River. Full tree calf leather binding gold title on red title piece on spine . Little rubbed top and bottom of spine. Bright clean copy.

Forced to winter over when the Terra Nova failed to pick them up, the party eventually trekked over 230 miles of sea ice to Cape Evans. 8vo, 382 pp, frontispiece, 98 b&w plts & 3 b&w fold-out maps, top edge gilt. Original blue pictorial silver gilt stamped cloth, with silver pictorial vignettes to spine and front cover. Spine a bit dusty, spine ends a bit rubbed, covers a bit marked. Freiburg: Herderische Verlagshandlung, 1900. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. A dialogue and history on all the Australian states, including natural history, major towns and industries. The illustrations are mostly wood block, drawn from many other contemporary sources. The author was German who migrated to Australia where he became a doctor in Brisbane. This volume illustrates Lauterer's passion for the Aborigines and takes a full 90 pages to describe their culture, medicine and language. Large 8vo, (x) 482pp, color frontispiece & many black and white illustrations in the text. Original pictorial brown cloth covers stamped in black & gilt, slightly rubbed but still a bright clean copy in vg+ cond. Ferguson 11461.
